Service of Remembrance
First United Methodist Church (Sunday, November 3rd) at 7PM - "W. Earl Lewis, founder of the Illinois Memorial Ministry for Indigent Persons, was a doorman working in Chicago when he read about the burial of hundreds of people in mass graves in his county. Inspired by the need to raise public awareness of this situation, Mr. Lewis labored to establish an Annual Interfaith Memorial Service in Chicago.
Modeled after Mr. Lewis’ idea, this service offers our community an opportunity to act as a surrogate family to people who were buried without family or friends to mark their passing. It is also an opportunity to light a candle for a loved one, or have their name called during the service.
This service is open to all denominations and faiths. Representatives from several local congregations will speak to honor those who have died in the past year. Service of Remembrance is hosted by Athens First United Methodist Church, located downtown at 327 N. Lumpkin St. Athens, Georgia."
